G Scale Standard Gauge (also known as G64 or Gauge3) models Standard Gauge prototypes in a ratio of 1:22.5 (13.5mm/ft) on a track gauge of 63.5mm. As opposed to G Scale Narrow Gauge (also known as G45 or LGB) which models Narrow Gauge prototypes in 1:22.5 on a track gauge of 45mm.
GRS offer a
wide range of Standard Gauge items to compliment the Narrow Gauge system. G64
is seen by us primarily as a working accessory to normal garden railways in
1:22.5. Enthusiasts want more and more working accessories on their railways
and we feel that this fits in well with this idea. Why should we not have a Standard
Gauge feeder system to a Narrow Gauge rail head? There are several prototype
examples in the U.K. Dinas, Aberystwyth, Welshpool, Barnstaple and Blaenau
Festiniog stations all have standard and narrow gauge on opposite platform
faces, whilst the Leek and Manifold had transporter wagons and end on interchange
loading facilities at most stations. Thus the scope of any garden railway is
thereby enhanced with such a system.
Obviously any
garden railway enthusiast can, if he so chooses, have a complete G64 system
with no G45 narrow gauge but the space requirements must be carefully
considered. We are designing our locomotives and rolling stock to go around a
minimum of eight to ten foot radius and to this end, the normal stock G64
turnout will be of these radii. For those requiring a sharper radius certain
locos and stock will go round 6ft radius. Custom built pointwork is always
available to order for those requiring such items. The GRS G64 Trackwork is
fully compatible with both LGB, Aristocraft and Tenmille G track systems.
GRS are
therefore offering a limited range of locos and rolling stock of small branch
line prototypes, so that those with limited space can still manage to have a
standard gauge feeder system. As the idea is to have a branch line image, in
certain circumstances it should be possible to operate the feeder line on an
automatic shuttle, thereby leaving the operator free to concentrate on other
matters. Electric locos can be supplied with track current or battery power
depending on operational requirements. An auto train or railcar is ideal in
these circumstances, and if other trains are used they should be kept to a few
wagons or a couple of coaches, again four wheelers for the latter are just
right.
The present G64 range of Locomotives, Coaches and Freight rolling stock, models prototypes from GWR, Midland, Southern Railways, British Railways, LNER, LSWR, and LMS, along with a comprehensive range of Track, Parts and Accessories. Major projects will be announced in the press as they come to fruition. In the meantime the G64 range is continuing to expand.
